Kansas City wide receiver Dwayne Bowe will be wearing a Chiefs jersey, not an orange jumpsuit, this Sunday when his team takes the field against the Broncos for Sunday Night Football. Bowe, 29, was arrested for marijuana possession last Sunday during the Chiefs bye week.
Bowe could still see punishment from the NFL as the current collective bargaining agreement states that the league, not the team, will dole out punishments for substance abuse violations.
Bowe’s production thus far in 2013 has not been stellar and marks his second straight year of decline. He has only 33 catches for 369 yards and 2 touchdowns. However, in Week 9 (the Chiefs last game) Bowe was targeted a team-high 12 times and brought in 7 catches for a season-high 67 yards. Week 9 was the second time in three games that Bowe was targeted at least 9 times. Despite some lackluster production in 2013, Bowe could rise to the occasion for a big game if he continues to see so many balls thrown his way.
The Chiefs will travel to Denver to face the Broncos in Week 12 and will play for a national Sunday Night Football audience. Kansas City, who boasts one of the league’s toughest defenses, looks to slow a Peyton Manning-led Bronco offense that has made mince meat of most defenses this year.
Regardless of how well the defense plays, Kansas City will have to score this week. (Peyton Manning has shown no signs of being susceptible to anything close to a shut out.) Looking to put some points on the board, it is likely that Chiefs quarterback, Alex Smith, will take to the air for some big yardage.
All of this considered, along with the increased number of targets Dwayne Bowe has seen these last few weeks, it seems likely that Bowe will have opportunities to haul in some passes this week. We can only hope that Bowe’s arrest will not be too much of a distraction and that he will be able to perform under the spotlight of Football Night in America.
