San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis left the team’s Week 10 game against the Carolina Panthers during the second quarter with a concussion and did not return. Davis recorded just one reception for two yards before leaving the game.
With concussions being taken much more seriously, Davis’ return to action is still up in the air. According to new concussion guidelines in the NFL, Davis will undergo several tests throughout the week to determine his readiness to resume play. Once a team doctor clears the tight end, another doctor, unaffiliated with the team, must then evaluate him and also clear him to play. If and when Davis gets the nod from both doctors, he will return to action.
Unfortunately for the 49ers and Vernon Davis fantasy owners, this is not the first time Davis has suffered a concussion. Last season in a game against the Seattle Seahawks Davis was knocked out of the game with a concussion, however he was able to play the following week.
At this point, only time will tell with Vernon Davis’ concussion. If he does miss time, look for the 49ers to go to the ground game more against the New Orleans Saints in Week 11. Luckily for the injury-ridden 49ers, the Saints have the league’s seventh worst rush defense.
Fantasy owners should follow Davis’ progress vigilantly in the coming days. In the case that Davis does not play, rookie Vance McDonald would start in his place.
