Sell High on Chargers Tight End Antonio Gates

Can Gates keep rolling against tougher pass defenses?

Chargers tight end Antonio Gates is having a great season so far and it’s time to trade him while he is still hot. The 33-year-old is on pace to break 1,400 yards this season, but don’t expect this success to continue.

Antonio Gates has exhibited exceptional play with 438 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns through 5 games, but there are many obstacles in the way of him continuing his dominance.

First and foremost, is a brutal Chargers schedule. San Diego faces the stifling defenses of the Colts, Bengals and the Chiefs twice. Those team’s defensive units rank 13th, 11th and 10th respectively in the league.

Gates has also dealt with his fair share of injuries, especially in recent years. The veteran tight end has missed 10 games total in the last 3 seasons combined. He has yet to miss a contest through 5 games, but re-injuring himself is not something that is out of the question.

Antonio Gates can only play as well as quarterback Philip Rivers does, leaving his worth up in the air.

Rivers has played very well thus far, but as shown in the past, that does not always last too long. Rivers had been in a bit of a lull for the past 2 seasons, throwing a total of 35 interceptions, and failing to have a QB rating of 90 or higher. Though Rivers looks solid now, a potential slip back into mediocre play could have a significant negative impact on Antonio Gates’ production.

Sell high on Gates while his momentum is still fairly high in fantasy leagues. He holds pretty good trade value and could be instrumental in fortifying other areas of your team.
