Its Week 5 and there are a couple of starting running backs with some unappealing matchups and situations. Two guys you may want to banish to the bench are DeMarco Murray and Rashard Mendenhall. This is a tough bye week for many teams, but if you can afford to bench these players, you might want to consider it.
The Dallas cowboys are playing the juggernaut Denver Broncos offense this week in Dallas and that’s bad news for just about any running back. The biggest threat to Murray isn’t the Broncos defense, it’s the scoreboard. If Manning and company start putting up points on every possession, Dallas will be forced to abandon the run and pin their hopes on the arm of Tony Romo.
The Cowboys are allowing the fourth most quarterback points and it will be a shocker if Peyton Manning isn’t posting multiple touchdowns by halftime.
The Broncos are poised to run up the scoreboard and take away the running game from Dallas. If Dallas falls behind early, Murray will spend the afternoon blocking for Romo instead of running the ball.
Rashard Mendenhall –
Rashard Mendenhall is in coach Bruce Arian’s doghouse for a series of screw up during Week 4 including stepping out of bounds when the Cardinals were protecting a late lead against Tampa Bay.
Mendenhall has played poorly in his last two games rushing for a total of 50 yards on 21 carries. If Mendenhall doesn’t get his act together against the Panthers this week, look for backup running back Andre Ellington to start digging into his carries.
To make matters worse for Mendenhall, the Carolina Panthers sport the top ranked defense in the league, to go along with their top ranked rushing defense. Carolina has allowed only one rushing touchdown all season long and absolutely shut down Marshawn Lynch during Week 1 limiting him to just 43 yards on 17 carries.
This is a bad matchup for Mendenhall and a bad week to give him the rock. Save your fantasy team the trouble and leave him on the bench for Week 5.
