While quarterback Brandon Weeden heals from a thumb injury, many fantasy owners assumed that veteran quarterback Jason Campbell would be the obvious choice to start Week 3 against the Vikings in Minnesota. But Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski obviously had something else in mind when he named NFL journeyman, Brian Hoyer, as his Week 3 starter.
Hoyer has already played for the Patriots, Steelers, and Cardinals and is now preparing for his second NFL start on Sunday.
Chudzinski seems to be very confident in the young and unproven quarterback, stating that Hoyer, “can make every throw that you need and there are no limitations from that standpoint.” And with Trent Richardson off to Indianapolis in a surprise move this week, the Browns may have to lean heavily on Hoyer this week.
While fantasy owners are not going to be starting Brian Hoyer, many owners are deeply invested into two Browns players who need Hoyer to be successful – Tight end, Jordan Cameron, and wide receiver, Josh Gordon.
With Weeden under center so far this year, Cameron has been consistently dominant. The change of quarterback may hamper Cameron’s play somewhat, but plays will still be called for him as Chudzinski and offensive coordinator, Norv Turner, love to utilize their young tight end. Cameron should still record solid numbers this week.
Gordon however, may belong on your bench this week with Hoyer under center. Hoyer will find it hard to get the ball deep to Gordon against a Vikings defense does a good job defending the deep ball. Gordon’s return to your fantasy lineup should wait one more week as Hoyer’s performance may not be pretty.
