In a bizarre special teams blunder Thursday night against the Broncos, the Ravens have lost playoffs hero Jacoby Jones 4-6 weeks with a sprained MCL.
It happened in the 2nd quarter when Jones was signaling for a fair catch. Somehow his own teammate Brynden Trawick, blindly ran into him. MRI results showed a sprained MCL which will sideline Jones for at least a month.
For an offense that was already missing Anquan Boldin, Jones’ absence will be costly for Baltimore. As the 2nd receiver, Jones is decent. As a punt returner and kick returner, Jones is a huge threat to teams. If there’s anyone else on the Ravens roster who can fill Jones’ special teams presence, he has not made himself known yet.
To the Ravens fortune, they have some untested depth at the wide receiver position. Undrafted rookie Marlon Brown from the University of Georgia played very well in the preseason and continued his effective play Thursday night after Jones’ injury. Brown had 4 receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown, establishing a solid rapport with quarterback Joe Flacco early in the season.
Baltimore will certainly have their work cut out for them this season. With Jones gone for nearly half the season, they’ve lost a solid deep-ball threat on offense, along with a critical cog on special teams. One thing is for sure, Jones will not be coming back for a 2nd season of “Dancing With The Stars” anytime soon.
