Tampa Bay Buccaneers Doug Martin is the 3rd ranked running back in this year’s fantasy draft standings. With an Average Draft Position (ADP) of 2, he’s likely to be taken with the one of the top two picks in all fantasy draft formats.
Martin had one of the best rookie seasons ever last season rushing for 1,454 yards with 11 touchdowns to go along with 49 receptions for 472 yards and one touchdown. He compiled the third most yards from scrimmage ever by a rookie with 1,926 yards behind only Edgerrin James and Eric Dickerson.
While his 2012 stats are very impressive, Martin showed some inconsistency last season. He went bananas during Week 9 against Oakland when he ran for 251 yards and 4 touchdowns. During the following week against the Chargers, he ran 19 times for only 68 yards and never got into the end zone. Martin had a knack for punishing bad teams and falling short against teams that had a rugged run defense.
Martin will see a significant amount of the Tampa’s offense run through him, especially if quarterback Josh Freeman continues his sporadic play. Fantasy owners should also note that Tampa Bay has one of the top offensive lines in the NFL this season. If the line stays healthy, Martin should post numbers similar to last year.
Doug Martin is one of the only running backs in the NFL who will not be sharing carries this season. He is well worth the second pick in fantasy drafts and has the potential to finish the season as the best fantasy running back.
