Draft Zone: 14th Ranked Wide Receiver – Saints Marques Colston

The New Orleans Saints Marques Colston is the 14th ranked wide receiver in this year’s fantasy draft standings. With an average draft position (ADP) of 44, that puts Colston in the middle of the 3rd round for 12-team drafts.

Although he is currently on the active/PUP list with foot pain, Colston has been one of the more consistent receivers in the league during his career. Colston played much of last season suffering from plantar fasciitis, but it’s getting more difficult as he ages. That being said, he has racked up more than 1,000 yards in seven of his eight professional seasons. He’s also averaged a little more than seven touchdowns per year during that time span.

The big receiver out of Hofstra obviously benefits from playing with Drew Brees — who is still one of the elite quarterbacks in the league. The Saints had the No. 1 passing offense in the NFL in 2012 with 312.7 yards per game through the air.

Colston turned 30 years old this June, but he didn’t show signs of aging last year. He grabbed 83 catches for 1,154 yards with 10 TDs in 2012. His consistent performance as the No. 1 receiver on one of the NFL’s top passing offenses makes him a no-brainer pick in the third-to-fifth-round range.

If a fantasy owner use an early pick on Calvin Johnson, A.J. Green or Julio Jones, Colston would be a very high-end No. 2 receiver in any format.
